How Does Water Under Floor Heating Work?

 It is still a fact that Underfloor Heating installations in the UK are still viewed as a ‘new way of heating’. This method of heating does go back to Roman times when warm water or air was circulated beneath the floor typically in bath houses. It is certainly a tried and tested method in many installations in the UK and is a growing industry.

Our design allows hot water to be circulated through pipework installed in the floor structure. This could be a solid / screeded floor or a suspended timber floor; there are few applications where underfloor heating is not suitable.

The hot water is provided to a distribution point called a manifold from the heat source which could be, for example, a boiler, heatpump or an number of other options that produce hot water.

The manifold then allows an important level of control by pumping and blending the water to the correct design temperature, this is then circulated through the pipework in the floor structure.

The correct design temperature in most boiler-fed systems will be between 50˚C and 60˚C but in a heatpump system it can be as low as 30˚C which ensures maximum efficiency. Underfloor Heating Supply will always design your system taking into account your choice of heat source. Design is crucial to ensure the best achievable efficiency in today’s raising climate of fuel cost. Underfloor heating is the perfect partner to maximise the use of low temperature heat sources such as heat pumps.

As part of our design service, in particular when a heat pump and/or a solar thermal system, all necessary mechanical and electrical docking drawings can be provided to illustrate exactly how the various components should be fitted and linked to each other. There are many possible configurations that may include underfloor heating with a heat pump, solar, storage and/or preheat cylinder with several control options. We can also provide a design drawing illustrating how a conventional gas or oil boiler can be added to the configuration (known as a bivalent system).

How do you control the room temperature with Wet Underfloor Heating?

With the exception of the single room thermostatic valve kit, all of our kits require a separate room control thermostat.  The thermostat controls an actuator valve on the appropriate circuit on the manifold to open and close the heating pipework circuit(s) relevant to the room in which the thermostat is located.

What Flooring to use with Water based Underfloor Heating?

The best materials to use on top of Under Floor Heating are materials that conduct heat such as screed, concrete and floor tiles.  Carpet and wood will act as insulators and therefore restrict the performance of your Underfloor Heating System.  If you are going to install carpet on top of your under floor heating system we recommend purchasing using one with a TOG rating of less than 1.5 and a light weight underlay of 0.5 TOG.

If you are planning to use a wood floor you must ensure that it is compatible with underfloor heating & our recommendation is that a wood finish floor should not exceed an overall depth of 22mm.

What are the Cost and Environmental benefits of Under Floor Heating?

When compares to a traditional radiator system underfloor heating systems can provide a much more cost effective heating solution. Considerable savings on your heating running cost can be achieved; savings of up to 33% are not uncommon.

The carbon footprint of any property has never been so well scrutinised, particularly with the requirement to provide a ‘running cost certificate’, commonly called an EPC, as part of any sale. The environmental benefits with a correctly designed underfloor heating system are obvious when less fuel can be burnt to achieve the required comfort level in either a domestic and commercial installation. The ECO credits and reduction in running costs are all too obvious and are likely to influence property prices and potential future saleability.

The living environment, other than the warmth, is rarely considered. Another benefit of underfloor heating is that it reduces moisture content of a property and actually influences the levels of dust mites and other parasites in the home. A real benefit for asthma sufferers.

Getting quotes for the work 

  • It is important to have a broad view of the equipment that a supplier proposes. Throughout the industry it is still evident designs & installations are not being done correctly.
  • There are a few simple pointers to give a comparison of quotes you may have obtained.
  • What is the area being quoted for – how many square metres?
  • Are the materials quoted for all that you require – will you need to purchase additional equipment to make it work? 
  • Is a full design drawing going to be provided?
  • What is the level of proposed control – we only use digital controls whereas other suppliers may offer analogue controls to keep their cost low. A quality control system ensures running cost is kept as low as possible.
  • The total length of underfloor pipework being provided – a reduced amount is a good indication that the pipe spacing has been increased which can lead to a higher running cost or reduced comfort level.
  • The proposed number of manifolds and circuits of pipe.
  • The quality of equipment and warranties provided.
